Genre: Mostly Sports Romance. Also some Chick Lit
Formalities aside, let’s get started with getting to know Author ME Carter!
BBF: Where do you come up with the ideas for your stories?
ME: Real life. Change of Hart started with a news story about a local football player and turned into a romance in my brain. Hart to Heart came from some volunteer work I used to do. FriendTrip and WeddedBliss…ok fine. Those are 100% my imagination. But bouncing off of Sara made it fun to just mess around. Juked has some elements of my own life experiences in it. But I can’t say what quite yet.
BBF: Do you see yourself writing in the same genre? How important or not important is including romance in what you write?
ME: I don’t always write in the same genre. I tell the story in my head. The next one I’m working on is much more gritty and dirty of a romance. The one after that…it’s not romance at all. It’s just…disturbing. Or at least, I hope it is. 😉 *wink*
BBF: This is something I’m always curious about, probably because I’m so picky about it when I write, but how do you choose names for your characters? Is it whatever comes to mind, or do they have meaning?
ME: I hate picking names. The ones I like are probably over used and I’m not creative that way. Half the time the name is picked because I was taking a break from my thought process and someone pops up on my FB newsfeed. No lie. However, I have incorporated the names that were contenders for my kids. Addison, Megan, Lindsay, Matthew, Bennett…all contenders at one point.
BBF: How do you choose the titles for your books? And do the titles usually come before or after you’ve written the novels?
ME: It varies. Change of Hart was named by Brenda Rothert, an author friend of mine. Jason’s name was originally Jason Prince and she said “I wish you would name him Jason Hart so you could call the book Change of Hart.” Done. My mother named FriendTrip in a hotel room while Sara and I bounced ideas around. And my friend John named Juked. Huh. I just realized how terribly uncreative I am.
BBF: Who’s your favorite villain from your books? Who is it and why?
ME: Her name is Tiffany. And you’ll find out why. Just not quite yet. 😉
BBF: Do you have a favorite character from your books? Who is it and why?
ME: Oh gosh, I really…no. They all mean different things to me. So, not at this point.
BBF: Can you tell us a bit about your writing process? How long does it usually take? And is the process the same for each of your books?
ME: For me, it varies from book to book. But my life has also changed from book to book. For instance, I wrote Change of Hart in 3 weeks. The story was running so fast in my head that if I didn’t get it out, I was going to explode. So I just wrote. When Hart to Heart, I was pregnant and pissed off. It took me longer because I had to do more research, but I wrote in between naps and vomit sessions. FriendTrip and WeddedBliss were so different because I was working with a co-author. So I would write a chapter, send it to her, she would write a chapter, send it back. Honestly, it was the easiest writing process so far. Juked…well it had a full on outline. I’ve never done that before. But with a very difficult baby, I don’t have the luxury of just cranking it out while the other kids are at school anymore. I have to write for an hour here and two hours there. So I had to outline it as much as possible so I wouldn’t forget.
BBF: What are you currently working on? And what can we expect from you in the future?
ME: I’m writing a second book in the Juked series. It’s called Groupie. It is raw and gritty and I feel dirty writing it. It’s stretching me out of my comfort zone. I love it.
BBF: What are you most looking forward to about visiting Boise Book Fest?
ME: I’ve never been to Idaho!! I love potatos!!!!
BBF: Before we say our goodbyes, can you tell us something random about yourself? Just for funsies. And then that favorite character you mentioned– can you tell us something random about them, too?
ME: Random, random, random….Ok…I was a foster parent for 10 years, 8 of those when I was single. 2 of my kids came from that experience. And no, I didn’t foster to adopt because I couldn’t have a baby. I just did it in a more backwards order than most!
Describe your books in 3 words: Fun, happy, pretty sure I just lied about half of my books
Favorite thing about your genre: The fantasy of it all. Who doesn’t want the famous athlete to fall for the everyday girl?
A genre that I would love to write: YA. I always get caught up in the steam!! Makes it embarrassing when my dad reads them One thing readers would be surprised to know: I actually hate writing. I just love STORYTELLING. And I know a lot of people who have helped groom me so I know how to do the writing part.
When writing, night owl or morning person? Night!!
When I’m writing I must have: FB open. Its like I have to reset my brain every few hundred words
Pantser or Plotter? Both
I’m currently reading: A beta read for a new author
My favorite cover from your books: Can’t tell ya yet. 😉
Which character from your books do you most identify with: I think there are parts I identify with in all my main women
